ASTM International has published F3782-26, establishing the first industry-wide framework for sampling and testing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in synthetic turf products.
May 12, 2026 · Industry Standards
ASTM International has formally released ASTM F3782-26, the first unified industry standard governing the sampling and analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in artificial turf. The standard applies specifically to synthetic turf fibers and backing materials, providing a consistent, reproducible methodology for manufacturers, specifiers, laboratories, end users, and regulators.
What the Standard Covers
F3782-26 focuses on the two material components most relevant to PFAS exposure assessment: turf fibers and backing fabrics. A key procedural requirement stipulates that all sampling must occur at the point of manufacture — not after shipment or installation at a job site.
That restriction addresses a well-documented complication in outdoor product testing: PFAS compounds are pervasive in the environment, and products exposed to ambient conditions routinely show detectable background concentrations that do not reflect intentional use. By anchoring sampling to the manufacturing stage, the standard isolates whether PFAS was deliberately incorporated into production.
“Although STC members committed in 2024 to stop intentionally adding PFAS to their products, this standard gives manufacturers, specifiers, laboratories, end users, and regulators a clear framework for how turf samples should be collected and analyzed.”
— Melanie Taylor, President & CEO, Synthetic Turf Council (STC)
Industry Context
The Synthetic Turf Council, whose members represent a significant share of North American artificial turf production, made a voluntary commitment in 2024 to eliminate intentional PFAS additions across their product lines. F3782-26 now provides the verification infrastructure to back that pledge — defining exactly how compliance should be measured and documented.
The standard is part of a broader expansion of ASTM’s PFAS-related portfolio, which now encompasses testing protocols, remediation guidance, and exposure assessment across multiple product categories.
About ASTM International
